All about Amazon Parrots!

The Amazon parrot is a bigger parrot of the Amazon forests that range from the south of America to Caribbean and Mexico. Most of these Amazon parrots are primarily green with accented colors. They may be vivid sometimes depending on the species. The Amazon parrots have four toes on each of their feet. These comprise of two on the front and two on the back. They main source of food are fruits and nuts. They are supplemented along with the leafy matter.
The Amazon parrots have a great ability in mimicking human speech and any other sound they hear. Due to this fact, they are getting more popular as pets. This is one of the main reasons for them becoming endangered.
Yellow Crowned Amazon Parrots
The amazons of the yellow crowned group are the parrots that are most sought after. There is a variation of the amount of yellow on the heads of these birds depending on their species. They do vary in their personalities but all of them have high intelligence and the ability to talk. The northerly race throws tantrums while the southern race has personalities that are mellow!
Double Yellow Head Amazon parrot
The representative of the family that is the most northerly is what is called The Double Yellow Head Amazon parrot. These parrots are very popular throughout Mexico. Most of these birds only produce a few offspring each year and hence you do not find many in number. These parrots, especially the male ones, get nasty with each year during the breeding season. This is the only Amazon parrot whose head turns completely yellow and that too bright yellow when it is turning into a full adult! The beak of this parrot is in coloration a light horn.
The Yellow Napped Amazon Parrots
As we move southward, we find the Yellow Napped Amazons. This is a very popular pet in the United States of America. They have a different color and not much of yellow is seen on the head. Their beaks may be black or grey.
The Panama Amazons Parrots
Further down are the Panama Amazons in panama. It is not one of the sought after parrots for the purpose of a pet bird keeping. They are very small in size and have very little of yellow on their heads. Their beak color varies from black to horn color with black streaks on them sometimes. Panama Amazons however have very little negative traits when compared to the other Amazon parrots!
The Blue Fronted Amazon Parrots
Next, we come across the Blue Fronted Amazons. These are found in Central America. These are basically of three types. The first is more dark-pigmented than the rest and has very little of red, the next is slightly green colored and then the other is the blue colored species. The subspecies of these are light green in color. The Blue Fronted Parrots make excellent pets.
Other Popular Breeds
The next most popular breed of parrots are four in number. These are the Red Lured Amazons, Lilac Crowned Amazons, Green Cheeked Amazons and the Lilacine Amazons. These are the subspecies of the above few mentioned amazons. The largest of the amazons are however the Mealy Amazons.
